In cold locations, thermal insulation alone cannot keep water pipes from freezing. A pipe freeze protection system can prevent freezing of fluids in pipes such as general water piping and fire sprinkler piping.

nVent Thermal Management offers two heat trace cable systems for commercial pipe freeze protection—nVent RAYCHEM XL-Trace for sophisticated applications and RAYCHEM WinterGard for less critical applications.

Both heat trace cable systems utilize self-regulating technology to provide heat where it is needed without worry of overheating. This is particularly important in temperature critical applications such as fire sprinkler systems or plastic pipes.


RAYCHEM XL-Trace is a complete heat trace system that provides pipe freeze protection of metal and plastic pipes, above ground or buried.

RAYCHEM XL-Trace is Great for Sprinkler Systems

NFPA-13 allows use of electrical heat tracing to freeze protect fire sprinkler systems.

RAYCHEM XL-Trace provides many advantages over dry or glycol fire sprinkler systems:

  • Simpler design without the need for dry actuator control or glycol filled systems for freezing areas.
  • Simpler retrofit or building expansion designs without worries about water delivery times.
  • Longer sprinkler pipe life compared to dry systems.  Dry systems have moisture trapped in the pipes after testing, leading to increased internal pipe corrosion, shortening the life of the pipe.
  • Lower cost piping compared to galvanized pipe recommended for dry systems.
Self-Regulating Technology

nVent RAYCHEM self-regulating electric heat trace cables automatically adjust their power output to compensate for temperature changes. Heat is generated as electric current passes through the conductive polymer core between the conductors. As the temperature drops, the number of electrical paths through the core increases and more heat is produced. Conversely, as the temperature rises, the core has fewer electrical paths and less heat is produced.

Advanced Control Systems

nVent Thermal Management offers two advanced control systems and a basic thermostat controller for freeze pipe freeze protection systems: The RAYCHEM C910 and RAYCHEM ACCS-30 controllers are specifically designed for use with RAYCHEM XL-Trace cables; whereas the RAYCHEM AMC-F5 controller is best suited for RAYCHEM WinterGard cables.

  • Is ideal for smaller buildings with critical piping  systems that require monitoring
  • Can control a single heating cable circuit

  • Is ideal for large freeze protection systems or multiple heat-tracing applications
  • Can control up to 260 heating cable circuits from a single user interface for site wide monitoring

  • Is a basic thermostat for the RAYCHEM WinterGard system
  • It has a fixed set point of 40°F (4°C)
  • It can be used for ambient-sensing or line-sensing
  • It can be used to control a single heat tracing circuit, or as a pilot control of a contactor switching multiple heat tracing circuits
